THE MILITARY HISTORY GROUP

The organising team consists of Marcus McLean, Jim Devitt, Tom Currie and Max Wagstaff.   Marcus will be the chair.
Meetings will be held every second month on the 4th Monday of the month at Moss Vale Golf Club, starting March 22.

The Definition:
The Military History Study Group started its meetings in May 2003 by the late Alan Fudge, where the ground rules were established.

The definition of military history is covered in the broadest terms and includes  Army .Navy and Airforce operations dating back to medieval history and includes the biographies of well known leaders as well as the study of campaigns.  The group is not restricted to ex servicemen in fact we  wish to attract those who can bring an open mind to discussions and who take no preconceived positions, also those who may have studied ancient history and those just interested in history generally.  Our intention is to place ourselves in the position of the commanders of the day, to review their operations and with hindsight to see if there was another way of achieving their military aim.   Presentations are made more realistic by the use of maps and diagrams to show the positions and movement of opposing forces.

Please NOTE

Tom Currie has agreed to take over the position of acting co-ordinator of the Military History Group in Marcus McLean's absence on leave.
The group is most anxious to hear from people who would be prepared to be a presenter at meetings.  Send Tom an email if you would like to help.  tjcurrie@bigpond.com

September Meeting 27/09/10

The speaker for our Military History meeting on September 27th will be Nick Elmer, an ex Royal Australian Navy and Royal Netherlands Navy officer. Nick will speak to us on the Battle of Salamis. A short description follows....

"The Battle of Salamis, in 480BC, was one of the most important battles in history. The victory by the Greeks under Themistocles insured that Xerxes would be forced to retreat to Persia. The battle would lay the foundation for an Athenian Empire that would come to be called the Delian League.
This battle was fought using various types of galleys and provides a deep insight into how these war machines were employed. "
